December 31: The Day of the Lord

One day, two faithful members of our “family of faith” (Simeon and Anna, by name) were led by the Holy Spirit into the Temple of God (Luke 2, 22-40). They went there with a sense of awe and humility, ready to see how God was going to work His wonders through them – but also through Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah, who was presented to them.

As we mark the end of a year and the beginning of a new one, let us make sure we continue to allow the Holy Spirit to lead us to God’s temple and may we, too, have a sense of awe and humility, especially as we ready ourselves for God to work His wonders in our lives each and every day.

Let us not lose sight of the examples we have before us today: Simeon and Anna, and Joseph and Mary. They were wise, prudent, and filled with hope; these are gifts that are not beyond our reach! Kindness and compassion, humor and hope, and perseverance are gifts that belong to us already. Let us be sure to listen to the Holy Spirit who is constantly speaking to us through God’s Word, through the events of each day, and through the people He sends our way.

Holy men and women of God, pray for us. Holy Family of God, pray for us.
