San Francisco nació en Asís (Italia), en el año 1182. Después de una juventud disipada en diversiones, se convirtió, renunció a los bienes paternos, y se entregó de lleno a Dios. Abrazó la pobreza y vivió una vida Evangélica, predicando a todos el amor de Dios. Dio a sus seguidores unas sabias normas, que luego fueron aprobadas por la Santa Sede. Fundó una Orden de frailes y su primera seguidora mujer Santa Clara que funda las Clarisas, inspirada por El.
Ciertamente no existe ningún santo que sea tan popular como él, tanto entre católicos como entre los demás cristianos y aun entre los no cristianos. San Francisco de Asís cautivó la imaginación de sus contemporáneos presentándoles la pobreza, la castidad, y la obediencia con la pureza y fuerza de un testimonio radical. Llegó a ser conocido como el Pobre de Asís por su matrimonio con la pobreza, su amor por los pajarillos, y toda la naturaleza. Todo ello refleja un alma en la que Dios lo era todo sin división, un alma que se nutría de las verdades de la fe católica, y que se había entregado enteramente, no sólo a Cristo, sino a Cristo Crucificado.

St. Francis of Assisi is widely known for his life of poverty and love of creation. But there’s a lesser-known side to the friar as well – a side that showed a deep reverence for the Eucharist and attentive care to “the sacred” in everything and everyone he encountered. Sadly, sometimes he is trivialized and made into a kind of a tree-hugger, but his Canticle of Creation is a profound way of understanding not just his appreciation of the presence of God, but the presence of God within all of creation.
Today, October 4, the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Francis, who renounced his wealth to follow Christ and founded the Order of Friars Minor, later called the Franciscans. He was born most likely in 1182, died in 1226, and was canonized in 1228.
St. Francis is often cited as an example of poverty – he and his friars worked and begged for just enough food and resources to survive each day. He is also known for his love of creation, but he always loved God first and creation in its proper order. And while he preached peace and some may have seen him as “gentle” and perhaps “weak,” there was a very demanding side of him. Francis demanded much not only of himself, but also of his fellow friars in following Christ. He implored them to see in Christ’s complete self-offering at the last Supper and on the Cross as “the perfect the perfect act of poverty,” through which we have been given new life and hope. Francis wrote: “God , who became Incarnate and died on the Cross, gave us His body as our own food. We must be forever grateful.”
Let us pray. “Lord Jesus Christ, who are called the Prince of Peace, who are yourself our peace and reconciliation, who so often said, “Peace to you,” through the intercession of St. Francis, grant us your peace. Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice, and genuine love. Please banish from our hearts whatever might endanger peace. Enlighten our rulers that they may defend the great gift of your peace. May all peoples on the earth become as brothers and sisters. May the peace we long for blossom forth and reign over us all. Through St. Francis’ good help and in your Holy Name. Amen.”
