We will soon see the change of the seasons. Even sooner, we will see the change of the time (our return to daylight saving time). Change is never easy. Lent is proving that in its own unique way: our hearts and souls are being tested, we are being challenged to grow in virtue. We are also being challenged to see the darkness in which we live – and take a step or two into the light (of Christ).
Lent is a perfect time for discerning how to best exit the darkness and enter into the light. For example, in being more faithful to prayer in this season, can we see more clearly the truth of who we are and what our priorities are? In fasting and in giving things up for Lent, are we willing to see more clearly our habits and our hungers, what we rely and depend on, and in whom we really place our trust? In serving the poor in these 40 days, are we willing to see more clearly our abundance, our need to have (and have more), and are we willing to see how we are called to share what we have with those who have so much less?
Let us pray. “O God, rich in mercy, you so loved the world that you sent your only Son for our deliverance. Lifted up from the earth, He is our light and our life; exalted upon the Cross, He is our truth and our salvation. Raise us up with Christ and make us rich in good works this Lent, so that we may walk as Children of the Light toward the everlasting joy of heaven. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Muchos proyectos y esfuerzos humanos fracasan porque se deja a Dios fuera del cuadro. Por ejemplo, según las Escrituras, Israel quería ir por su propio camino, confiando en sus recursos y en sus alianzas con los poderosos del momento. Estos poderosos son derrocados por otros más fuertes, y entonces todo colapsa.
Hoy la gente trata de alcanzar prosperidad y felicidad, pero a expensas de otros, con la fuerza de las armas, o confiando en artilugios, trucos o dinero. Pero hemos de reconocer, como la temporada Cuaresmal nos está enseñando, que no nos podemos salvar sin Dios. No podemos vivir como hijos e hijas de la Luz sin Dios.
La salvación se basa en el amor de Dios y se expresa en amor al prójimo. La “regla de vida” de nosotros es: ama a Dios con todo tu ser, y a tu prójimo como a ti mismo; mira a Dios en tu prójimo y mira también un poco de ti mismo en tu prójimo.
En resumen: tenemos que convertirnos a Dios por amor. Por eso, oremos: “Señor Dios, a través de la historia los hombres han tenido la experiencia de que no podemos ser felices confiando sólo en nosotros y en nuestros recursos e intuiciones. No permitas que idolatremos nada hecho con nuestras manos, sino que busquemos humildemente justicia, verdad, y felicidad para todos, en colaboración y comunión contigo, tal como nos enseñaste por medio de tu Hijo Jesucristo, que vive y reina contigo por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.”
