Today we celebrate the Feastday of the Gospel writer St. Mark, who wrote the earliest of our four Gospels. Testimonies from the early Church describe St. Mark as an assistant to St. Peter. His help probably included translating St. Peter’s Aramaic sermons so that the all Christians (especially former Gentiles) could understand him. According to such testimonies, after St. Peter’s death, at the request of the Christians in Rome, St. Mark wrote what he knew of the Apostle’s memories of Jesus. His Gospel reflects the plain, blunt speaking style of the Galilean fisherman and captures their sense of awe and wonder at the healing power of Christ.
St. Mark’s gift to the Church was to describe the works and miracles of Jesus, the humble Son of Man, who came not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as ransom for all. Our response to St. Mark is not only to listen to his message and meditate on it, but also to live its ideal of humble service in our life and practice. Psalm 89 says, “Forever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.” This sentiment is ideal for celebrating St. Mark, who announced the goodness of Jesus in every word of his Gospel. Through his intercession, may we find ourselves announcing the goodness of the Lord (in our words and deeds) in the very same way.

La Iglesia celebra hoy la Fiesta de San Marcos. Según su Evangelio: “En aquel tiempo, se apareció Jesús a los Once y les dijo: “Vayan por todo el mundo y prediquen el Evangelio a toda creatura …. y después de hablarles, subió al cielo y está sentado a la derecha de Dios. Ellos fueron y proclamaron el Evangelio por todas partes, y el Señor actuaba con ellos y confirmaba su predicación con los milagros que hacían.” (Marcos 16, 15-20)
Este final del Evangelio de San Marcos nos sitúa en el corazón mismo de la Pascua: la aparición de Jesús Resucitado a los discípulos y el envío a todo el mundo. La experiencia Pascual es el punto de partida de un dinamismo universal en el espacio y en el tiempo. Los creyentes en Cristo Jesús tienen la misión, el deber, y la responsabilidad de transmitir lo que han visto y oído, de no guardarse para sí la Buena Noticia de la salvación, sino que deben proclamarla, dice Jesús, no solo a toda la humanidad, sino “a toda la creación.”
Jesús nos manda actuar sólo con la fuerza del bien y hablando el lenguaje nuevo del amor. Es decir, nosotros, depositarios de ese mensaje, somos también ahora responsables de seguir adelante con aquella misión, sin miedo a las dificultades, con disposición al servicio, y con el poder del amor que Jesús nos sigue transmitiendo por su Espíritu Santo. La Iglesia es apostólica por definición y por gracia de Dios, y debe ser Evangélica en su modo de vida y en el de sus miembros. San Marcos, ruega por nosotros para que sea así.
