July 21: Much More Than Words

Human communication depends on much more than words. Notice how different a conversation can be when harmony exists between people as opposed to when it is absent. If two parties, for example, share a common bond and wish nothing for the best for the other, whatever is being communicated has a greater likelihood of being both well-said and well-received. On the other hand, when distance exists between the parties or animosity is present, it is simply much harder to communicate well and be mutually understood.

While all of this is true between persons, it can also be true when we are relating to God. Therefore, before God (as with other people), we do well to pay attention to our relationship with Him: are we distant? do we approach the Lord with an open heart? are we transparent and honest? Hopefully, we will always approach God and our fellow human beings with genuine love, for then we can come to know better the one with whom we wish to share our words, our gestures, our hearts, our dreams, and our lives.

Let us pray. “Loving God, make us attentive to the words your Son speaks to us and help us lovingly follow Him, by following the compassionate example He has shown us. May our faith and our prayers always be so much more than formulas that might sound good, but never change our hearts or influence our lives. Make it possible that our words and deeds may touch the hearts of others, helping them come to understand how much you love us and care for us, through Christ our Lord. Amen.”
