January 18: The Call from God

The First Book of Samuel (13, 1-16) describes “the call” from God to David, whom God has chosen to be King. A reading like this is an opportunity for each of us to reflect on our own vocation, our “being chosen” by God for a special task. We may wonder why God has chosen us rather than others whom we might regard as far more qualified to do the work He has given us to do. Further, within the vocation in which we already find ourselves, we can still ask to what more, in our present circumstances, God is calling us. Let us be sure to listen to God’s call and ask for the strength and courage to say “Yes.”

Let us pray. “O God, send your grace upon all the Baptized. Open our hearts that we may discern your will; inspire us with a love and a desire to surrender ourselves to serving others in the name of your Son. Teach us to follow our respective paths in this life, guided by your Spirit. You live and reign forever and ever. Amen.”
