December 13: Simple, Poor, and Humble

Advent is teaching us, yet again, that Jesus will live among us more fully if we are simple, poor, and humble … and if we are searching with Him to discover the will of the Father. Psalm 34 tells us “The Lord hears the cry of the poor.” According to Pope Francis: “Those who have everything are neither waiting for anything nor asking for anything. Those who believe themselves to be saints and perfect already never ask for forgiveness. Those who think they already know everything never pose questions or think they need to learn anything.”

The Church celebrates today the feastday of St. Lucy. She is one of the most beloved saints of our tradition and is the patroness of the poor and humble, the blind and those with vision problems, and sick children.

Let us pray: “Saint Lucy, you did not hide your light under a basket, but let it shine for the whole world to see. Help us trust that we are called to let the light of our own faith illumine our daily lives and the lives of others. Help us have the courage to take that same faith into our work, our recreation, our relationships, and even our conversations. We ask your intercession through Christ our Lord. Amen.”
