December 10: Opening Our Minds and Our Hearts

As twinkling holiday lights and decorations go up on the homes around us, let’s remember that these four weeks leading up to Christmas Day (and the Christmas Season) have a deep religious meaning. As we know, this is a time for preparation for and celebration of the coming of Jesus Christ. The origin of the word “advent” is from the Latin adventus, which translates to “coming” or “arrival.” But the meaning goes beyond that. Advent also means “coming toward,” as in God coming toward us, in the flesh in the person of Jesus.

God “comes toward us” in order to dwell among us and share in every aspect of our lives. So, this season reminds us in various ways that God enters into solidarity with the whole human family in the most radical way. Above all, He reassures us that we are loved and we are never alone! In the remaining days of this time leading up to Christmas may we all open our minds and hearts to the most intimate love that God has in store for each and every one of us!

Let us pray. “God in heaven please give us the grace we need to open our minds and our hearts, especially during this holy season. Help us to hear your voice, teach us your ways, and give us the courage to be your beloved. In the name of Jesus your Son. Amen”
