August 31: The Eucharist

Here at Holy Cross, we dedicate our Thursdays to prayerful Adoration in the presence of the Lord. All are invited to join us for an hour (or more, or as much time as you can), as we make a parish-wide pilgrimage into the church for quiet meditation, contemplation, Scripture reading, or whatever kind of prayer is your preference.

Here, at the end of August, we offer a proposed theme for meditation: Michelangelo’s great sculpture, the Pieta. Think of Mary, the mother of Jesus, holding in her lap, in her arms, the broken body of her crucified Son. Ponder the tenderness, the intimacy of that image…

What Mary is doing in the sculpture, we do every time we gather around the Table of the Lord for the Mass or for Adoration: with tender reverence, we hold the body of Christ in our hands, or on our tongues, or in our hearts – and, in an intimate gesture, we not only hold but we take in His presence, we take in His great love for us.

For further reflection: Is it not true that we approach the gift of the Lord’s broken body with our own brokenness? We are broken individuals, we are a broken parish, ours is a broken Church, we live in a broken world. We, the broken, come to the one who was broken for our sakes, to share in the simple bread we break in His memory (and to pray in His real presence) – all in hope that our brokenness might be healed.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament begins in our parish church with our 8:30am Mass on Thursdays and concludes with the Benediction (or blessing) at 8:30pm. Join us!
