La Iglesia Universal celebra hoy la Fiesta de San Juan, Apóstol. “Íntimo del Señor, obsesionado con el amor.” Éstos pueden ser muy bien los rasgos propios de San Juan. Él había experimentado en su propia persona lo que significa ser amado por Jesús y, a cambio, amarle. Era el hombre que predicaba amor. Las palabras que usaba y la urgencia e insistencia con que hablaba no pueden venir sino de un hombre que vivió profundamente ese amor y que sintió que ése debía ser también el distintivo de los seguidores de Jesús y de las comunidades cristianas. Que ojalá nosotros permanezcamos y crezcamos en el amor de Jesús.
Oremos. “Oh Dios, ¿quién puede nutrir nuestro amor mejor que quien nos habló de él y quien nos lo mostró hasta morir, tu Hijo Jesucristo? Que como Él, y fortalecidos por su gracia abundante, respondamos al calor de tu amor cuidando a nuestros hermanos y hermanas, aun a costa de nosotros mismos. Te lo pedimos por Cristo nuestro Señor. Amén.”

On the third day of Christmas, the Church celebrates the Feast of St. John the Apostle. The Gospel according to St. John clearly emphasizes the divine nature of Jesus, as both Light and Life and the Word of God “incarnated” into the human family. The Gospel also puts love (agape, or self-sacrificing love) as the vital bond between Father and Son, between Christ and the disciples, and also between disciples.
Some wisdom worth sharing: “Money is useful, but you cannot buy respect – that is earned. You cannot buy human decency – that is taught. You cannot buy a sense of humor – that comes from experience.” Although St. John was one of those in the “inner circle” of Jesus’s disciples and what we would call a “prominent player” in the life of the early Church, he dedicated his life to humble service, faithful proclamation of the Gospel, and the full imitation of “the Christ-life” among all people. May he intercede well for us today and into the new year – helping us follow his example.
