September 18: The Day of the Lord

Centuries ago, Saint John Chrysostom offered this advice, “Faithfulness in little things is a big thing.”

In things big and small, Jesus encourages us to use our spiritual resources wisely. The manager in Jesus’ story (Luke 16) used all his resources to secure his future. We must be no less resourceful with regard to our “eternal” future. We have at our disposal the Mass, the Eucharist, and the other Sacraments – as sources of Divine grace. We also have the Holy Word of God for daily meditation and practice, and the teaching authority of the Spirit-guided Church to direct us in life. Jesus is constantly prompting us to use these resources and all the others we have been given in such a way that it will be said of us, “And the master commended them because they acted so prudently.”
