October 22-23: Preparing to Celebrate Sunday’s Mass

As we prepare for Mass this weekend, be sure to take a look at the reading from the Book of Sirach (35, 12-14, and 16-18). The Church has put the Sunday readings together, over a three-year cycle, with a very deliberate intention that the first reading at Mass will always “set the table” for the Gospel, it will serve as a “companion piece” and anticipate the words and deeds of Jesus in the Gospel.

So, notice how Sirach 35 declares “the prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds to reach the unseen throne of God.” Such prayers, the Scripture says, are heard because they come from the hearts of people who know how much they need God; they come from hearts that are humbled and open to the grace God can provide. Such prayers are not haughty or arrogant. Sirach says that, although God has no favorites and answers the prayers of all, the oppressed, the orphans, the widows, and those who can least help themselves are His special concern. When it comes to turning away from our sinfulness, we are certainly among those who “can least help themselves!” We most certainly need God’s help.

The passage from the Book of Sirach does set the table for Luke 18, 9-14, where we will hear Jesus’ parable about the Pharisee and the tax collector. At the heart of the parable is a powerful reminder that the only way to approach God is with a humble and repentant heart. There must be a space in our lives for grace to enter and work its miracle. Can we keep our focus entirely on God and our relationship with Him, recognizing that we are constantly in need of His mercy and forgiveness? Will we?
