Mientras nos acercamos al fin del año de la Iglesia, vamos a escuchar más y más de la importancia de la vigilancia. estamos llamados a ser responsables de la gracia y de los talentos que Dios graciosamente nos ha otorgado. Y, como dice Jesús, cuanto más se nos ha dado, tanto más se espera de nosotros, y tanto más tenemos que hacernos responsables de los dones que se nos han confiado. El Señor nos dice repetidamente, “¡Esten preparados!” Él nos invita a ser administradores “fieles y prudentes” – que sabemos que los bienes no son nuestros.
Hemos recibido mucho de Dios: el don de la vida, nuestra fe, nuestra capacidad de amar, y el perdón de nuestros pecados. Demos gracias a Dios y pidamos su bendición.
Oremos. “Padre, en la generosidad de tu imaginación creadora tú distribuyes a las personas una rica variedad de dones y talentos de mente, corazón, y gracia. Convéncenos de que lo que hemos recibido, lo hemos recibido para los otros, y de que, si hemos recibido más que otros, no somos por ello ni más grandes ni mejores que ellos, sino solamente más responsables por más dones recibidos. Ayúdanos a usar todo lo que somos y tenemos en servicio de los demás. Te lo pedimos por medio de Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Amén.”

As we draw closer to the end of the Church’s year, we hear more frequently about “being prepared,” we hear warnings on readiness, and we hear about the importance of “vigilance.” The challenge, however, is to be vigilant, watchful, and on guard about things that matter. Among these are: forgiving others, getting more involved parish life, going to confession, loving our enemies, helping the poor, being pro-life, being pro-family, and being morally good all the time. How often, though, are we careful and on guard about things that, in the end, really don’t matter? Life, after all, is more than food, life style, and possessions – all these things are provided for by God. Our calling is to make room in our lives to receive the Kingdom, and to receive it with open hands and arms.
St. Basil the Great once asked, “What is the mark of a Christian?” His answer was: “It is to watch daily and hourly and to stand prepared in that state of total responsiveness pleasing to God, knowing that the Lord will come at an hour that we do not expect.”
Let us pray. “Almighty God, whose will is to restore all things in Christ your Son, grant, we pray, that we may be always at the ready to render you honor and gory and ceaselessly proclaim your praise. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.”
