May 5: The Month of Mary

The May Crowning of Mary is a longstanding Catholic tradition which honors the Virgin Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven. A “May Crowning” typically includes presenting Mary with a floral crown, other flowers, or handmade items.

Throughout Christian history, Catholics have long honored the Blessed Virgin during the month of May. To symbolize her significance in the Church and in our lives, the “May Crowning” is set up to display her Queenship and hr God-given dignity as the mother of Jesus. Catholic churches, like our own, typically include at least one area dedicated Mary and that area (or another) is decorated in a special way this month to celebrate the importance of our Mother Mary for the Church, in the church, and in our personal lives.

Note: We do not view Mary as a goddess, nor do we worship her. She is honored or venerated as the mother of Christ, the most important woman in our faith and the most powerful intercessor, too.
