One of the many helpful Lenten practices we can adopt is to look ahead. Yes, we are encouraged to “live in the present moment” and “seize the day,” but we can also look ahead to where Lent is leading us: Holy Week, Easter, and a renewed life beyond Easter. Lent, after all, is not an endurance test to see if we can survive the rigors of prayer and penance. It is aimed at joining Jesus on the way to the Cross and rejoicing with Him in His rising to new life.
Just as He did in His public ministry, Jesus challenges all who seek to follow Him to leave behind their (our) narrow view of God and the journey to God. Have we made the God in whom we believe too small? Can we follow Jesus’ advice to broaden our understanding of God?
The point is that the God whom Jesus reveals is more generous, more expansive, and more inclusive than we realize. Jesus continues to show us that there is much more to God than we even dare imagine. For example, St. Peter (in the Acts of the Apostles) says, “God has no favorites.” That expression is the fruit of “a renewed life beyond Easter.” Let’s be sure to look ahead and catch a glimpse of Jesus’ vision of His Father – it is a vision filled with “good news” for all who are willing to receive it.

En Lucas 4, 24-30, se ve que los que escuchaban a Jesús en su ministerio publico montaron en cólera. Se pusieron furiosos y quisieron matar a Jesús empujándole por el barranco en donde se alzaba su pueblo. Da la impresión de que se sentían propietarios de la salvación. Ellos eran el pueblo elegido. En realidad, se sentían propietarios de Dios mismo. Supuestamente, sabían cómo debía actuar Dios. Y Dios no podía actuar sino salvando a su pueblo.
Pero no es así el Dios de que nos habla Jesús. Ni siquiera es así el Dios de que se habla en el Antiguo Testamente, el Dios de los profetas. El amor de Dios es universal y nadie escapa de su mano, de su piedad, de su misericordia. Todos somos hijos e hijas suyos, hechura de sus manos, queridos, y amados. Si no lo entendemos así, terminamos por imaginarnos un Dios tan pequeño como nuestras mentes.
El Dios que Jesús nos revela es más grande que nuestras mentes. Y su amor es, hay que repetirlo y repetírnoslo, universal e incondicional. Por eso, solo cuando somos capaces de amar a todos, sin excepciones de ningún tipo, es cuando anunciamos el Dios de Jesús y damos testimonio de Él.
