God Guards Our Lives

Over the years, people outside of the Church have commented, “You Catholics have a blessing for everything!” And this appears to be true. But, given that God is the source, inspiration, and completion of everything, it seems fitting that a prayer or a blessing could fittingly accompany everything.

We were saddened to hear recently that Sr. Jeanette Heindl, SP, will be moving to a new neighborhood here in Portland. After her mother’s death earlier this year, Sr. Jeanette and her sister Dorothy have sold the family home (where Albina Heindl, their mother) lived for 61 years. Members of the parish have responded to Sr. Jeanette’s departure and relocation in this sort of way: “I am so grateful I got to know you these last few years.” “You are a true inspiration to all of us at Holy Cross!” “Our Bible studies will not be the same without you.” “May your new journey be blessed in every way possible and know that you will not be forgotten here at the Holy Cross Community.” “I will miss you at the Senior Luncheons, St Vincent de Paul Christmas Boxes, at Bible Study, and at Mass.” “Your new parish will be hugely blessed to have you.” “I wish you every happiness as you continue to serve the Lord wherever you are called.”

Please join us in praying for God’s blessing upon Sr. Jeanette with this “official” prayer of the Church:

“God guards you from harm, God guards your lives. God guards your leaving and your coming back, now and for always.” (Psalm 121, 7-8)

O God, guardian of your people, our guide along the journey:

you use no pillar of cloud by day, nor fire by night, yet we sense your presence with us.

God of the journey:

may you walk with Sr. Jeanette into a new land;

may you guard her in her vulnerable moments.

You are dwelling within her as she departs from here,

and you promise to be her peace wherever she goes.

Renew in her a deep trust in you. Calm her mind and heart.

Help her to trust that you will always be with her in everything.

Each day, help her to place her life into the welcoming arms of your love.

May your powerful presence run like a strong thread

through the thoughts, words, and deeds of her life

so that she will know that you are

the source, inspiration, and completion of everything, forever.

We pray for her, as always, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
