Hoy celebramos la Fiesta San Bartolomé, quien fue uno de los 12 Apóstoles de Cristo y que predicó el Evangelio después de la Ascensión del Señor. Según la tradición, esta misión la llevó a cabo en la India y Armenia, hasta que recibió la corona del martirio.
Bartolomé es mencionado en los Evangelios (Mateo 10,3; Marcos 3,18; y Lucas 6,14) siempre en compañía de Felipe, y en los Hechos de los Apóstoles (1,13) donde se hace presente en Pentecostés. En el Evangelio de San Juan, donde no aparece con el nombre de Bartolomé, muchos lo han identificado con Nathanael (que significa “regalo de Dios”), que también aparece siempre con Felipe. En hebreo “bar” significa “hijo de” y por eso Bartolomé puede significar “hijo de Tolomé,” como el apellido de Nathanael.
Este Santo nació en Caná de Galilea y fue llamado por Jesús a través de Felipe para ser su apóstol (Juan 1, 45-51). También fue uno de los discípulos a los que Jesús se apareció en el mar de Galilea después de su resurrección (Juan 21,2).

We celebrate today the Feast of the Apostle Saint Bartholomew. He is one of “the Twelve” and is mentioned in the Gospel lists of those “sent” by Jesus (Matthew 10,3; Mark 3,18; and Luke 6,14). The name (Bartholomaios) means “son of Talmai,” which was an ancient Hebrew name. The Catholic tradition, inspired by any ancient writers, identifies Bartholomew as Nathaniel in the Gospel of St. John (1,45-51, and 21,2). In John 1,47 Jesus says of Nathaniel, “Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him.” In Nathaniel’s brief dialogue with Jesus, we surmise that he is a good Jew, honest and innocent, a just man, who devotes much time to quiet reflection and prayer, waiting for the Messiah, the Holy One of God.
Jesus, in Matthew 5,8, says, “Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.” In Nathaniel we have an example of the pure man who sees – recognizes – God, and on seeing Him believes in Him, and upon believing in Him, follows Him. No details are known for sure about the rest of the life of today’s Saint after the Ascension of Jesus, but tradition holds that he preached in the East and died a martyr’s death.
Let us pray. “O Jesus, Saint Bartholomew’s greatest desire was to know the truth. As soon as he met you, he wanted to become one of your disciples. You said of him, “Here is a man in whom there is no deception.” We ask for your grace to confront the deceptions that try to influence us today. Help us to seek honesty in all things and give us courage to resist lying as a means of self-protection. Inspire our minds, we beg you, to recognize the truth when we hear it. In your Holy Name we pray. Amen.”
