Hoy, celebramos la Fiesta de San Bartolomé, Apóstol, al que generalmente se identifica con Natanael. Nacido en Caná de Galilea, fue presentado por Felipe a Jesús en las cercanías del Jordán, donde el Señor le invitó a seguirle y lo agregó a los Doce. Después de la Ascensión del Señor, es tradición que predicó el Evangelio en la India y que allí fue coronado con el martirio.
¡Qué gran honor para nosotros si el Señor puede afirmar de nosotros, como de San Bartolomé, que somos una auténtica persona, alguien en quien no hay engaño!
Oremos. “Señor Dios nuestro, ojalá se pudiera decir de cada uno de nosotros lo que Jesús dijo de San Bartolomé: “Ahí tienen a una persona honesta, a un cristiano cabal, en quien no hay engaño,” uno que es digno del nombre de cristiano. Haznos, O Dios, verdaderos discípulos de Jesús, que vivamos día a día tal como creemos, y que con nuestro modo de vida cooperemos en atraer a los hermanos y hermanas hacia tu Hijo, Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Amén.”

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Apostle St. Bartholomew. In St. John’s Gospel, there is a very strong theme of what some have called “heralding.” This happens when people meet and get to know Jesus in a rather personal interaction, no matter how briefly that might be, and they spread the word of their experience (they herald it). The Samaritan Woman is a good example of this, but it is also evident in the first chapter of this Gospel: Jesus comes to His own, His own recognize Him, and they spread the Good News.
In the example from John 1, St. John the Baptist proclaims Jesus’ true identity, two of his disciples hear what he says and approach Jesus, who invites them to spend some time with Him; the next morning Andrew goes to find his brother Simon, who also comes to Jesus. Then Jesus calls Phillip, who goes to announce the coming of Jesus to Nathaniel. Nathaniel (St. John’s name for Bartholomew) is the last in this series of heralds. So, Nathaniel does become a “disciple” of the Lord and eventually an “Apostle,” one who is sent … sent to herald, spread, or announce the Good News.
