The Church celebrates today the memorial of St. Elizabeth of Portugal, Daughter of King Pedro III of Aragon and Constantia; great-granddaughter of Emperor Frederick II, and great-niece of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, for whom she was named.
She lived in the 13th-century, became Queen of Portugal, and suffered for many years in a difficult marriage, praying all the while for her husband’s conversion, and working with the poor and sick. When her husband died, she distributed her property to the poor, became a Franciscan tertiary (“Third Order”), and retired to a monastery of Poor Clares which she had founded.
Although much of the Catholic world celebrates her memory on the day of her death, July 4th, our Independence Day observance in the U.S. has led us to transfer her feastday to July 5th.

La Iglesia celebra hoy el memorial de Santa Isabel de Portugal. Su nombre significa “Promesa de Dios” (Isab = promesa, El = Dios). Ella nació en 1270, era hija del rey Pedro III de Aragón, y le pusieron este nombre en honor de su tía abuela Santa Isabel de Hungría.
Santa Isabel, admirable por su desvelo en conseguir que reyes enfrentados hiciesen las paces y por su caridad en favor de los pobres, era también Reina de Portugal. Muerto su esposo, el rey Dionisio, abrazó la vida religiosa en el monasterio de monjas de la Tercera Orden de las Clarisas de Estremoz, en Portugal, que ella misma había fundado.
Por el amor tan grande que Santa Isabel le tenía a la Eucaristía, se dedicó a estudiar la vida de los santos más notables por su amor a la Eucaristía, en especial Santa Clara. Después de enviudar, Santa Isabel se despojó de todas sus riquezas. Vivió los últimos años en el convento, dedicada a la Adoración Eucarística.
