Please join us for Mass in our parish church at 9am Tuesday. We will celebrate our nation’s birth and our thanksgiving for God’s providential care over our land and over our world. Our gratitude for (and our faith in) that providential care can help us live the Christian life more fully and can help us survive crises and disturbances that come our way.
In the Gospel we will share Tuesday (Matthew 8, 23-27), a storm on the sea raged, even after the disciples stirred up Jesus from sleep. He wanted to know, “Where is your courage?” Only then did He bring them back to a calm state of mind, reassuring them of His peace and His presence.
Life in our nation (and in our world) these days seems awfully stormy, doesn’t it? Partisan squabbles, divisions of so many kinds, and what appears to be growing lawlessness … all of these leave us ready to repeat the cry of the disciples in Matthew 8: “Save us, Lord.”
Let’s be sure to remember, however, that the storm on the Sea of Galilee was sudden and unexpected (both as it began and as it ended) – and sometimes our personal circumstances can change without warning. We can suddenly find ourselves in the midst of something overwhelming or we can find that the storm has quickly passed. If yesterday all seemed well, but today we are in crisis (or vice versa), Matthew 8 has a vital message for us: our prayers for help will not go unanswered. The Lord is stronger than any storm that may threaten us, and in calling out “Lord, save us!” we will not be left without help.

Que el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús le bendiga a usted y a sus seres queridos, y a todos aquellos que creen en la promesa de la paz y la buena voluntad en este Día de la Independencia … y cada día de sus vidas.
