The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “From infancy to death, human life is surrounded by the angels’ watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and humans united to God.” (no. 336)
St. Jerome, commenting on the Gospel of St. Matthew, wrote, “How great the dignity of the soul, since each one has from birth an angel commissioned to guard it.” In the Old Testament, the evidence of protecting angels is frequent. In Psalm 90 (verse 11), for example, we read: “For to His angels He has given command about you, that they guard you in all your ways.” It is clear throughout the Old Testament that our ancestors understood God’s angels as messengers carrying out His will, including the protection of His people.
In the New Testament, angels are frequently the links between God and His people. So we have Jesus saying: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look up on the face of my heavenly Father.” (Matthew 18, 10). There is the angel who consoled Jesus during His Agony in the Garden; it was an angel who delivered Peter from prison (Acts12, 6-10). And in the Letter to the Hebrews we read: “Are they not all ministering spirits sent to serve, for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?” (Heb 1, 14)
As children, many of us remember the prayer we were taught to say every night before sleep: “Angel of God, my guardian dear to whom God’s love commits me here. Ever this day/night be at my side to light, to guard, to rule and guide. Amen.”

Nos llamamos “católicos,” ¿no es verdad? Es decir, gente “universal,” por definición. ¿Cuánto y cómo nos preocupamos de los otros y de su eterna felicidad? La gente, cercana o lejana, habría de ser siempre nuestra preocupación. Guardemos a todos en nuestra mente y en nuestro corazón, con la bendición del Dios.
Entre los que nos pueden ayudar a ser fieles a lo que el Señor nos ha llamado son los Ángeles Guardianes (o Custodios). Hoy en día celebramos su día de fiesta.
Como gente que se esfuerza constantemente para crecer hasta alcanzar la madurez de Cristo, estamos ante Dios como niños, confiando más en su ayuda que en nuestro esfuerzo; porque hemos experimentado que nuestras fuerzas no siempre son dignas de confianza. Sabemos que Dios nos protege, nos envía ángeles para guiarnos, especialmente en la persona de Jesucristo, y en los que están más cerca del Señor. Jesús nos guía con su Espíritu para elaborar y desarrollar nuestro proyecto de vida.
Oremos. “Padre de bondad y amor, al celebrar hoy a los Ángeles Custodios profesamos nuestra fe profunda en tu protección siempre presente. Que nuestro Ángel Custodio sea en nosotros la voz que nos prevenga contra el mal que podamos hacer y nos impulse a ser la buena persona que cada uno de nosotros debiera ser, y así permanecer. Que este mismo Ángel nos recuerde que tú nos conoces y nos amas personalmente a cada uno de nosotros en Jesucristo nuestro Señor,que vive y reina por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.”
