Jesus is an example of what the Biblical tradition calls “a true prophet.” He speaks as a messenger of God and is indeed God’s own Son. He stands, as did all the prophets of the Old Testament, as a counter-witness to all that is against truth, all that is against love, and all that is against justice. As such, He inevitably incurs the anger and hostility of those who have power, power based on falsehood, on self-interest, corruption, and injustice.
The Church, in its communities and through individuals, is called on to continue Jesus’ prophetic mission, the mission of “counter-witness.” It will win us the support and admiration of some, but also hostility, anger, and perhaps even the violence of others. This is something we should not at all be surprised at, nor should we try to avoid it. Our only concern must be always to speak the truth in love. God will take care of the rest. Because, ultimately, truth, love, and justice will prevail.

The Church honors St. Rose Philippine Duchesne today. Her biographer writes of her: “In her first decade in America, Mother Duchesne suffered practically every hardship the frontier had to offer, except the threat of a massacre—poor lodging, shortages of food, drinking water, fuel and money, forest fires, and blazing chimneys, the vagaries of the Missouri climate, cramped living quarters and the privation of all privacy, and the crude manners of children reared in rough surroundings and with only the slightest training in courtesy.” (Sr. Louise Callan, R.S.C.J.)

Somos una Iglesia profética. El término “profeta” proviene del vocablo hebreo (nâbî) que se traduce “llamado por Dios” o “quien tiene una vocación de Dios.” El profeta en su primera acepción es el vocero de Dios, alguien que recibía instrucciones de Dios para ser dadas a su pueblo, no hablaba por iniciativa propia, sino que su discurso, su mensaje emanaba de lo que Dios le hablaba. En este sentido, el profeta no es uno que adivina el futuro sino que uno que lleva palabra de Dios al pueblo y con ella demanda obediencia porque trae al pueblo del Señor la palabra viva y exigente de un Dios de amor, vida y justicia. Y si no predice nada futuro, no por eso es menos profeta.
La misión profética de la Iglesia tiene su antecedente en la labor que realizaron los profetas del Antiguo Testamento dentro del pueblo judío. Bajo este marco de referencia, el pueblo de Dios, está llamado a realizar la misma labor que realizaron los profetas, es decir, denunciar la desobediencia por parte del pueblo y de los que están en eminencia a los mandatos y leyes de Dios, y en consecuencia anunciar el juicio que Dios traería de no acatarse sus prerrogativas.
La misión profética de la Iglesia debe ser entendida como anuncio de todo aquello que, derivado del mensaje revelado de Dios y de la acción del Espíritu Santo en los seres humanos, ilumina la realidad presente y futura con pautas que guían sus pasos hacia el verdadero bien de las personas, a imagen y semejanza de su modelo divino.
