May 2: The Month of Mary

The tradition of dedicating the month of May to Mary “springs,” so to speak, from this time of year when spring is at the height of its beauty. Spring is also connected with nature renewing itself. In her way, Mary gave new life to the world when she gave birth to the Savior, Jesus Christ.

Devotion to Mary is an important part of our Catholic identity. As our Mother, she is an example of a committed “yes” to the will of God. Because of strong devotion to her, many people ask her for help in the most difficult moments of their life – as any child does. However, devotion to her ought to also include a willingness to take our joys and hopes to her as well.

Suggestion: May Crownings are one of the most popular ways to celebrate the month of Mary. Have you ever thought of making a crown of flowers for your Mary statue at home (indoors or outdoors)? You could add a candle too for an extra touch! If you don’t have a Mary statue (the garden variety or one for your table or nightstand), now would be a good time to get one.

Pope Paul VI wrote: “May is the month during which Christians, in their churches and their homes, offer the Virgin Mother more fervent and loving acts of homage and veneration; and it is the month in which a greater abundance of God’s merciful gifts comes down to us from our Mother’s throne.” The Holy Father went on to say that May is an opportune time to let our petitions fly to Our Lady – especially for the needs of the Church and the whole human race – which most urgently require our Blessed Mother’s intercession.
