March 7: Sts. Perpetua and Felicity

Sts. Perpetua and Felicity (with the Virgin Mary and Child)

Sts. Perpetua and Felicity are remembered in the Church’s calendar today. They were two 3rd century Christian martyrs. St. Perpetua was a 22-year old mother with a son a few months old. St. Felicity, her slave, was pregnant with child (though her child was born during their imprisonment). They were from Carthage, a Roman Province in North Africa. Few saints were more greatly honored in the early Church. Their story is told in The Passion of St. Perpetua, St. Felicity, and their Companions, regarded as one of the great treasures of “martyr literature,” a document which is said to preserve the actual words of the martyrs and their friends. With the lives of so many early martyrs shrouded in legend, it is rare to have the first-hand record of their witness to the Faith. It was read in North African churches for centuries.
