June 9-10: Being Quiet and Listening Carefully

“At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave, where he took shelter. But the word of the Lord came to him, ‘Go outside and stand on the mountain before the Lord; the Lord will be passing by.’ A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the Lord — but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake—but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire—but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.” Elijah, at last, encountered the Lord in the tiny whispering sound. (First Kings 19)

Throughout the Old Testament in the Bible and even into the New, the people asked God for spectacular signs to prove His identity and authority. There are people today too who still look for striking miracles, the spiritual equivalent, one might say, of the heavy wind, earthquakes, and fire, but the Lord comes much more subtly into our lives and does so every single day. And when He comes, He may be giving us things to do, He may have tasks in mind for us, as was true with Elijah. Let us be ready for His gentle voice to whisper into our ears today and every day.

Unfortunately, we are bombarded with so much noise, whether of our own choosing or not, that God finds it hard to get a word in – not to mention a whisper! Let’s be quite and listen carefully.
