June 24-25: Preparing to Celebrate Sunday’s Mass

A part of this Sunday’s Gospel reads, “Jesus said, ‘Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.’” (Matthew 10, 29-31)

Perhaps we don’t know how much a sparrow is worth, but we get what Jesus means, right? We do matter when it comes to God. We are worth the death of His only Son! We are worth the gracious gift of Jesus Christ. We are worth the sending of the Holy Spirit to remain with us forever.

What God wants for us is goodness, peace, and joyful happiness living together in God’s love. Yet, these are impossible when we are afraid, un-committed, or there is something like anger and revenge within us (to which we are holding on). All of these serve as stumbling blocks to allowing His grace to be at work in our lives. The best revenge, for example, is forgiveness and it can set us free. Without it, we are caught in a self-destructive cycle. None of us can get ahead while trying to get even.

Let us pray. “Lord our God, help us to prepare well for this Sunday’s Mass. Open our minds and our hearts to the goodness that is yours, the peace you want give us, and the joyful happiness that awaits us in the Eucharist which we will share. Through Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you forever and ever. Amen.”
