July 15: St. Bonaventure, Birthday, Anniversary

When we are tired in a physical way, we usually have routines which can help us rest up and feel rejuvenated. After a hard day at work or working hard at gardening or accomplishing chores, we can feel spent, but a nap, some time where we can relax a bit, and some good nutrition can make a big difference. Being emotionally or spiritually tired, on the other hand, is harder to address. Being emotionally or spiritually tired can leave us feeling weary and exhausted and, sometimes, we end up thinking we can’t possibly make it through the day. The truth is, however, that we are not alone and that our God is the God of endless Hope!

If we let God, He will always breathe hope into us and fill our “spiritual lungs” with His own life and revive our souls. Not only will we reap the benefits of fresh courage and a rejuvenated heart, but God’s presence also will overflow to everyone we come in contact with.

There are many ways we can open ourselves to the “breath of God,” including: meditative prayer, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Confession, a personal encounter with someone we trust, or cracking open the Bible to search for some reassuring and uplifting words (for example, “Come to me all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11,28).

Today is the Feast of St. Bonaventure, the 100th birthday of our fellow parishioner Helen Shamrell, and the 32nd anniversary of the ordination of our pastor, Fr. Mark. May St. Bonaventure intercede in a powerful way for all of us as we mark various milestones and anniversaries this summer.
