January 24: St. Francis de Sales

St. Francis de Sales became the Bishop of Geneva in 1602, where he proved himself an extraordinary defender of the faith, a zealous witness to the Gospel, and a kind and pastoral bishop. His goodness, patience, and mildness became the hallmarks of his ministry and, indeed, his entire life. He had an intense love for the poor, and himself lived a life of extreme simplicity in order to provide more for those in need.

Together with St Jane Frances de Chantal, they founded the Institute of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin, for young girls and widows who felt they did not have the strength or inclination for the greater austerities of the older Religious Orders. The members of the community took Mary’s visit to Elizabeth as their primary inspiration. They were dedicated then (and remain dedicated today) to a life of humility, piety, and mutual charity. It was at the time of the creation of the Order of the Visitation Sisters that St. Francis came into contact with many of the most distinguished Church people of the day, and in particular with St Vincent de Paul.

Let us pray.O God, who for the salvation of souls willed that your Bishop Saint Francis de Sales become a generous and loving shepherd, graciously grant that, following his example, we may always display the gentleness of your charity in the service of our neighbor. Continue to bless the Visitation Sisters and your whole Church through the kind and generous intercession of St. Francis. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.”
