At the Mass on Sunday, the Church offered us St. Mark’s account of the “calling” of Sts. Peter, Andrew, James, and John (Mark 1, 14-20). Perhaps you noticed that the four of them “immediately” followed Jesus after having been called. They chose to be with Jesus, get to know Him, and be inspired by Him. And even though the Gospel tells us that their response (“immediate” and with conviction) is a model for us to follow, we can be sure that it wasn’t an easy decision to make, nor were they free of doubts or hesitations along the long path of that very same discipleship.
Being a disciple of the Lord, after all, following in the path of Jesus in faith, is not like putting on a magic cape – and then seeing everything work out according to our plans. It means living with freedom and joy, being “clothed” in a spirit of service, and being dedicated (“in good times and bad”) to loving God and our neighbors.
There is an old saying that “we can offer God heavenly music, lots of words, honest desires and good intentions, and even more words – but choosing for Christ and following His Way is spiritual homework that lasts a lifetime.” Jesus says to each of us today, “Follow me?” How will be respond to His invitation?

En la Misa del domingo, la Iglesia nos ofreció a Santos Pedro, Andrés, Santiago, y Juan. El Evangelio de San Marcos nos recordó que ellos inmediatamente lo dejaron todo y se comprometieron con Jesús. Y lo primero fue estar con Jesús, conocerlo, y entusiasmarse con Él. Pero seguro que no fue tan sencillo ni tan inmediato aunque San Marcos nos presentó a estos cuatro primeros discípulos como modelos para nosotros.
Ser discípulo de Jesús no es ponerse “una camisa de fuerza.” Es vivir la libertad y la alegría, revestirse de la condición de servidor de la causa del Reino, de la lealtad, y del amor a Dios y a los demás.
Podemos ofrecer a Dios música celestial, palabras, deseos, y más palabras, pero optar por Jesús y ser su discípulo es mucho más que palabras, es mucho más que una tarea meramente humana. Optar por Jesús y ser fiel a su Camino es también “tarea del Espíritu” … y sin su presencia y ayuda sería imposible. El Señor nos dice hoy, “Sígueme.” ¿Cómo vamos a responder a su llamada?
