Today, we celebrate the feastday of St. Josephine Bakhita. Among the greatest (but often overlooked) gifts given to us by God are the many Saints canonized over the years. They are given to us as examples of hope during all the possible combinations of human experience, joys and hardships, for example, which we might have. This group provides “real” examples of people who have walked faithfully with God, overcome great tribulations, made great sacrifices, and lived “real” lives, including when faced with the normal temptations attributed to our human flaws.
Happily for us, not only do the Saints serve as role models of hope and witnesses of God’s mercy, but they also serve as effective intercessors on our behalf – if we only take the time to get to know them and to ask for their help.
Today’s feastday of St. Josephine Bakhita, a slave from the Darfur region of Sudan who eventually joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity in 1896, offers the compelling story of a woman once sold into slavery who became a bright, shining light for others by her brave witness to God’s enduring love.

Cada 8 de febrero celebramos la fiesta de Santa Josefina Bakhita, religiosa africana. Ella nació en Darfur (Sudán) y se nacionalizó italiana. Ella vivió en carne propia los horrores de la esclavitud durante gran parte de su vida. El nombre “Bakhita,” que quiere decir “afortunada” en árabe, se lo pusieron quienes traficaron con ella cuando tenía entre 7 o 9 años, mientras que “Giuseppina” (Josefina) lo recibió doce años más tarde, al momento de ser Bautizada.
“Si volviese a encontrar a aquellos negreros que me raptaron y torturaron, me arrodillaría para besar sus manos porque, si no hubiese sucedido esto, ahora no sería cristiana y religiosa,” afirma Santa Josefina en uno de los impactantes testimonios recogidos en su biografía. Estas palabras hoy, de alguna manera, se han convertido en la carta de presentación que identifica la belleza de su espíritu y la grandeza de su corazón.
