Having taken our first, important step along the Lenten journey yesterday, let’s now remember that Jesus said His whole life purpose, and why He was sent, was “that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10, 10) When we were invited on Ash Wednesday to “turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel,” that is the very Gospel we seek to follow: “life and life to the full.”
At the same time, Jesus also said that His friends must share in His death and carry the Cross with Him. Admittedly, these two statements stand in paradoxical tension, but not in contradiction. From the very beginning, it has been a fixed principle of Christianity that only through dying with Him can we enter the fullness of life with Him.
The Book Deuteronomy, a book much loved and used by Jesus, presents faithfulness and loyalty as the key to the future of God’s people: “By walking in His ways, you shall live.” (Deuteronomy 30, 15-20) Life is to be found by totally accepting the way of life that God proposes: in good times and bad, in sickness and health, when carrying the Cross and when rejoicing in the triumph of that very Cross over sin and death.
Let us pray. “Lord our God, the ashes of repentance may have washed away by now, but we turn to you again today for you are the God of mercy. Look into our hearts today and throughout this holy season and grant what we truly need to be faithful to the way of your Son, who lives and reigns with you forever and ever. Amen.”

La Cuaresma nos va a mostrar que “fidelidad” no nos resulta fácil, a no ser que estemos intensamente entregados a una persona a la que amamos de verdad. Si somos leales, compartimos las alegrías y dificultades de la otra persona, y nunca perdemos nuestra serenidad interior o felicidad básica. Esto es también verdad en nuestra relación con Dios, que la vivimos de la manera más intensa si estamos fuertemente dedicados a Cristo. Le seguimos en su Pasión para resucitar con Él en la alegría de una vida nueva. Porque, si estamos con Él, hasta incluso la muerte, nos trae vida y felicidad.
La Cuaresma también nos va a recordar (repetidamente) qu ser responsable significa ser capaz de dar razón de lo que hacemos o no hacemos, del por qué obramos de una determinada manera. No basta con decir “no sabía” o “no lo pensé” o “no me di cuenta” o “todos lo hacían.” El gran regalo que nos ha hecho Dios, junto con la vida, es la libertad: la capacidad de decidir por nosotros mismos lo que queremos o no queremos hacer con nuestra vida, lo que queremos ser o no ser. Él nos ha dado la capacidad de elegir entre la vida y la muerte, entre el bien y el mal. “Seguir a Jesús” es optar por el bien y la vida. Rechazarle es optar por el mal y la muerte. Optar por la vida y por el bien es también optar por la fraternidad, por la justicia, por la cercanía, por la comprensión, y la misericordia. Es, en definitiva, seguir a Jesús.
