Including at this special time of year, sharing our faith is not always easy. A convert to the Catholic faith once said, “When I tell people about my experience of joy since becoming a Christian, they often scoff that this ‘Jesus stuff’ is just a crutch for weak people! Do you know what I think? If Jesus is a crutch, then give me two!”
Both Advent and the Christmas season ahead invite us to share what we have experienced and felt over the course of our lives. Such sharing can benefit both ourselves and those with whom we are handing on our experience, including our experience of Christ, His Church, and our spiritual and life-giving experience in it.
St. Mary and St. Elizabeth, two prime examples of “Evangelization” (spreading the Good News of the Gospel), felt the saving grace of God flowing through their lives — and were not afraid to encourage each other by saying so (see Luke 1, 39-45). Many of us were raised on the principle that “God helps those who help themselves,” but maybe we need to learn again what these holy women, St. Mary and St. Elizabeth say so clearly: that God is a gracious and generous God, and it is a blessed thing to believe in that graciousness and imitate that generosity. It is also a blessed thing to help one another, generously, along the way – and to rely on one another’s help, too.
Let us pray. “Grant, O Lord, that we may receive a new spark of hope and new vigor as we approach the Birth of your Son. May St. Mary, St. Elizabeth, and all your Saints intercede for us in a powerful way this week and always. Through Christ your Son, whose coming is near and whose love is certain, and who lives and reigns with you forever and ever. Amen.”

Pocas cosas (si es que hay alguna) son más lindas, tanto a nivel humano como divino, que el encuentro entre personas. Un encuentro supone una gran alegría y una gracia incomparable. La temporada del Adviento nos ha ofrecido repetidamente el ejemplo del encuentro entre las mujeres santas Santa Isabel y la Virgen María (Lucas 1, 39-45, por ejemplo).
Más profundos que los encuentros entre gente ocupada en asuntos de negocios, ciencia, política, o gente en sus ocupaciones y trabajos, son la comprensión, el amor y el compartir en unos encuentros realmente humanos. Éste es el tipo de encuentros que nos espera con el Señor en Navidad. Los encuentros son aún más profundos cuando Dios es compañero y parte en el mismo encuentro.
Para reflejar: La venida de Cristo en Belén trajo alegría al mundo. Con Él hay esperanza. ¡No hay ya más espacio para el miedo y la tristeza! ¡Incluso la Cruz puede llevarnos a la alegría! Que el Señor nos haga su pueblo, siempre contento y alegre.
Oremos. “Oh Dios, tan cercano, danos frescura de corazón en los últimos días del Adviento, para buscar las cosas que son realmente importantes, ésas que hacen nuestra vida profundamente humana; y al mismo tiempo, ábrenos a tu mundo, a tu visión, y a tus valores. Haz que anhelemos encontrarte con alegría, para que descubramos de nuevo el valor incomparable de la entrega gratuita, del respeto al otro, y del amor genuino y generoso, por Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Amén.”
