If we look at the whole Bible, both the Old and New Testaments, we find on occasion the births of significant people and those births happen in circumstances which point strongly to some divine intervention. For example, there a number of incidences where elderly women who had never given birth to a child are, through the intervention of God, blessed with a child, usually a son. Luke 1, 5-25 gives us the account of Elizabeth, Zechariah, and their son John the Baptist. Note that her “barrenness” is seen less as a curse than as a preparation for something special; God is intervening for her and her son will be the “precursor” to the Messiah.
An Old Testament example of this situation is the birth of Samson (Judges 13, 2-25). What is peculiar to all these stories, however, including this one, is that the child to be born has a very special role given to him by God. Each of these births is, again, a sign of God’s intervention: not one of them is an ordinary child; each has been chosen for a very special purpose, to be a forerunner of Jesus in some way or other.
In this final week of Advent, let us reflect seriously on our own calling by God. Like John the Baptist, each of us has been called to be a forerunner of Jesus, to prepare the way for Jesus to come into other people’s lives, especially those who have not yet had the experience of knowing Him. Let us keep our eyes and ears open this week for the opportunity to announce the Good News of the Messiah’s coming.

Navidad está ya cerca. En esta semana última, recordamos que en la Biblia las personas escogidas por Dios para una misión especial en su “Plan de Salvación” constantemente se presentan en las Escrituras como escogidas y amadas antes de su nacimiento, mientras se anuncia su alumbramiento de una manera especial: el Espíritu del Señor los mueve y su misión exige sacrificios.
Veamos el llamado de Sansón (Jueces 3, 2-25) en su saga folklórica, o el de Juan el Bautista (Lucas 1, 5-25). El silencio misterioso de Zacarías (padre de Juan) proviene probablemente de la alegría de un mensaje abrumador, demasiado sorprendente y maravilloso para poderse expresar en palabras.
Subyacente en estas “historias vocacionales” está el hecho de que el pueblo es débil, que la salvación es otorgada por Dios gratuita y graciosamente, que la esterilidad (las mujeres estériles) abre paso a la fertilidad, que se exigen siempre sacrificios. Y por eso, el Espíritu de Dios será quien moverá a esas personas elegidas. Todo esto es también aplicable y se hace verdad en nosotros, ya que estamos llamados a preparar el camino del Señor. Que nuestras oraciones se vuelvan más insistentes, para que nos entreguemos con mayor entusiasmo a llevar el amor y la justicia de Cristo a nuestro frío y áspero mundo.
Oremos. “O Dios, ningún ángel anunció nuestro nacimiento, pero muy bien sabemos que tú nos amabas aun antes de haber nacido, y que tú nos llamas ahora a preparar la venida más plena de tu Hijo en medio de nosotros. Revela tu fuerza en nuestra debilidad, conserva viva nuestra esperanza en el futuro, para que sepamos vencer todos los obstáculos que entorpecen el establecimiento del Reino de Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Amén.”
