August 25: Devotion and Affection

“The field and all that is in it will rejoice; then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy.” Psalm 96, 12

It has been suggested that the “toughest” (or hardiest) plant in the world is the purple saxifrage. It has delicate petals that look like they could fly away in the wind, yet it is found amid the harshness of the Arctic. The flowers survive by being clustered together, offering each other shelter against the most difficult conditions on the planet.

Might the purple saxifrage have some important lessons for all of us in these present times? Might it inspire us to pull together when facing crisis after crisis? Might it encourage us to “hang in there” amid the struggles we face – brought on by wildfires, high temperatures, food insecurity, economic uncertainty, or failing health? Might it stir us to persevere in hope day by day?
