Today’s liturgical celebration, that of the Queenship of Our Lady, occurs on the octave day (the eighth day) of her Assumption. In that feast, a week ago, we celebrated the reunion of Mary with her Son on the day of her death. She was the first to join Jesus in eternal glory on the basis that she is the only person, apart from her Son, who was totally free from sin all her life. As the first of the human race to stand before God’s presence in glory, and as the Mother of Christ our King, she is properly given the title of Queen.
Again, last week we celebrated her Assumption, God’s taking her to Himself, to be with her Son immediately after her death. At the completion of the “eight days,” we honor her not just as the Mother of God’s Son, but also as Queen of heaven and earth. This we remember each time we pray the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary.
Mary, as Queen, is also Jesus’ First Disciple, having given herself totally and unconditionally to God’s will for her. Let us ask her to help us to follow in her footsteps that we may live up to our own calling from the Lord our God. “Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life our sweetness and our hope ….”

“De hoy en adelante me felicitarán todas las generaciones,” canta la Virgen María (Lucas 1, 46-55). ¿Qué significa llamar a María, la humilde virgen, “bendita” o bienaventurada? Significa nada más y nada menos que estamos llenos de admiración, y que queremos adorar la maravilla (Jesús) que el Espíritu cultivó en su seno. Significa también que interpretamos desde ella que Dios mira a la humilde sierva y la alza a la altura. También que la venida de Dios a este nuestro mundo no busca lo alto sino lo profundo y que la gloria de Dios consiste en hacer grande lo que es pequeño. Llamar a María bienaventurada significa que, junto con ella, meditamos con admiración los caminos de Dios, que deja al Espíritu soplar donde quiere; obedecerle y decir humildemente con María: “Hágase en mí según tu palabra.”
La “realeza” de María (que celebramos hoy) está íntimamente ligada a su asunción y su glorificación. A santa María se le reconoce como Reina, sobre todo, por ser la Madre de Jesucristo, Rey y Señor del Universo. Desde su plena y definitiva gloria ejerce, junto a su Hijo, el cuidado amoroso sobre todo lo creado.
Oremos: Dios todopoderoso, que has querido darnos como madre y reina a la Madre de tu Hijo, concédenos amarla y venerarla como verdaderos hijos suyos y participar, por su intercesión, de la gloria de tu Reino. Por nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Amén.”
