Thank You, Holy Spirit

As the Fifty Days of Easter unfold for us, we hear in St. John’s third chapter, that Nicodemus approached Jesus and was both attracted to Him and puzzled by Him. Jesus was very much a mystery to Nicodemus and he sought to know Him better and hear Him more clearly.

The Word Among Us offers this reflection for us today: “There really is something mysterious about the Christian life. Think of how puzzling the saints can seem to us. How could St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta keep smiling in the midst of the suffering she encountered in the poorest of the poor? Or what about St. Maximilian Kolbe, a prisoner in Auschwitz who volunteered to take the place of a fellow prisoner who was condemned to die by starvation? While he wasted away, he peacefully led his fellow prisoners in prayer. ‘Who does that?’ some might wonder. Believers do, that’s who?

We are all a mystery as well. When we were baptized, we were born from above and filled with the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit that empowered Mother Teresa and Maximilian Kolbe lives in us. The Spirit is the mysterious presence who moves us to acts of generosity and kindness when we could just as easily walk away. The Spirit is the One who helps us forgive a longstanding hurt even though the wound still stings. And the Spirit is the One who can give us courage, no matter what we face each day.”

Let us dare to respond to the promptings of the Spirit of God this day … and remain grateful for the Spirit’s presence and power.
