October 5: World Teachers’ Day

World Teachers’ Day is an annual celebration across the globe. It is a day to celebrate the educators who are presently entrusted with teaching our children, youth, and adult learners. It is a day that offers us a chance to express our gratitude for our teachers and to pray for them and their all-important vocation. World Teachers’ Day is also a chance for us to remember all those women and men who once affected us in some way as students—to show gratitude to those we once admired from a classroom desk, a lunchroom, or a playground. It is a time to reflect on the teachers who were there for learning moments that defined our school experiences—even years ago—when we finally grasped a challenging concept with a feeling of accomplishment, when we faced a test of either math or the development of our character, or when we needed a shoulder to lean on.

For all of those who made a difference in our lives, helped set us on the right career path, encouraged us to step out of our comfort zone and try something new, or helped us when we faced a trying time, we pray: “Lord God, your spirit of wisdom fills the earth and teaches us your ways. Look upon our teachers today and those who have taught us in the past. Let all of them strive to share their knowledge with gentle patience and endeavor always to bring the truth to eager minds. Grant that they may follow Jesus Christ, the way, the truth, and the life, forever and ever. Amen.”

Thought for the Day: “Education is not the filling of a pot, but the lighting of a fire.” – WB Yeats
