November 28-29: First Week of Advent

As we take the initial steps along our journey this Advent, let us reflect on our attitudes in life, on our way of life, and on how we are responding to God’s call in our lives. Advent is so much more than just “a preparation for Christmas,” and yet it is a time when we can grow in our appreciation for and understanding of the true meaning and importance of Christmas.

The distinct language which the Scriptures offer us in Advent (“be vigilant,” “prepare the way,” and “be at the ready”) can be directed toward avoiding the extreme commercialization and secularization of Christmas. Clearly, it is not wrong for us to celebrate Christmas the way that we are familiar with, but we must not allow that to distract us from appreciating and celebrating the true meaning and importance of the birth of the Savior. A primary Advent-challenge is maintaining our focus on the light of truth and salvation that Christ has brought into our midst.

May the Lord, our God and Savior, born into this world and incarnate in the flesh, revealed to us, and through whom we have been made sharers in God’s love and life, continue to guide us on our journey. May God strengthen each of us in our resolve – so that we may always be ready to follow Him and walk in His path.
