May 4: The Real Presence

“Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.” (John 6, 51)

Along with our firm belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, we also hold that the Sacrament calls us to respond to that Presence – to appropriate, to assimilate totally into our very being, all that Christ teaches: His vision, His values, and His understanding of the meaning and purpose of life.

As a “Eucharistic people,” we are to be able to say, with St. Paul, “I live, not I, but Christ lives in me.” (Galatians 2, 20) Or elsewhere, “Let this mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2, 5) Our hope is that His thinking is (and more and more becomes) our thinking, His dreams are (and become) our dreams. This is the basic and fundamental meaning of sharing in the Body and Blood of Christ: total union with Him in our way of thinking and living.

For reflection: Some people still ask why they have to come to Mass and why they cannot pray at home. Of course, they can pray at home and sometimes, in all honesty, that is a better place to pray. But Mass is not just a time for praying, it is also a time for celebrating community. That cannot be done so well at home – we can only do that well together. Join us at Holy Cross for Mass and also on Thursdays (from 8:30am to 8:30pm) for Eucharistic Adoration. We are dedicated to building our community, celebrating it, and blessing our future. We would love to have you join us.
