Happy Easter! He is Risen!
As awkward as it may sound, let’s let Mahatma Gandhi, the father of modern India, set the tone for what the Catholic Church celebrates tonight. His words still ring true, even though he spoke them over seventy years ago: “When I despair I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but, in the end, they always fall.”
The words of tonight’s Easter Vigil liturgy express the same truth in an equally appealing way: ‘The power of this holy Easter night dispels all evil, washes guilt away, restores lost innocence, and brings mourners joy. It casts out hatred, brings us peace, and humbles earthly pride.”
Between light and darkness, between good and evil, a mighty struggle is still going on. It is still going on on so many levels, all at once. And, although the darkness often appears to be stronger than the light, it has not triumphed, nor can it.
St. Jerome said, “The light is remarkably resilient. Often in danger of being extinguished, it manages to survive, and to win victory after victory.” Tonight’s Vigil helps us remember that the darkness of evil and hatred will never have the last say … for the Resurrection of Jesus proclaims the ultimate triumph of light over darkness and goodness over evil, both in us and in our world. Let us pray throughout “the Great Fifty Days” of Easter for the grace to “walk always as children of the light,” following in the footsteps of the Risen One. Alleluia!

La realidad del misterio total de Pascua es tan asombrosa y real para nosotros que la tenemos que “re-vivir” no solo como un acontecimiento del pasado, sino como algo presente y real que nos afecta a nosotros hoy.
Esta noche, pues, celebramos el acontecimiento capital y central para la fe católica: la liberación del pueblo de Dios de la esclavitud del pecado, de forma que los hombres pueden entrar en la nueva y eterna Alianza por la que Dios, por su propia iniciativa, vincula a su pueblo consigo mismo en una profunda unión de vida y amor.
En favor del pueblo, en el Antiguo Testamento, Dios vio las dificultades que los judíos sufrían en su situación de esclavitud en Egipto, los liberó y selló con ellos la Alianza por medio de Moisés, en el Monte Sinaí.
En favor nuestro, Dios vio nuestra esclavitud al pecado y nuestra incapacidad para deshacernos de él. Así envió a Jesús, su propio Hijo, para hacernos libres por su muerte en la Cruz en el Monte Gólgota y por su Resurrección. Ahora somos un pueblo libre, capaz de proveer amor, servicio, y justicia. Celebramos esta libertad y esta Nueva Alianza esta misma noche. ¡Aleluya!
