“They took Jesus; and carrying the Cross by Himself, He went out to what is called The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. There they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on either side, with Jesus between them….”
St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote: “Language can deal with only a small part of reality. The rest – by far the greater part – is silence. Death is the great silence ultimately imposed on everyone. If we are to hear the words of Jesus, we must hear His silence too.”
Kneel by His Cross, if you will, but it is better to sit, because we are going to have to stay a long time – all our life, in a way. We have to sit with our own pain and sorrow and resist the temptation to “solve” them or avoid them. Only into silence will they pour out their meaning.
Through the centuries, millions of people have survived terrible “Calvaries” because they had learned something utterly profound from the Cross of Christ. Will we learn something from the Cross today?
The French have a proverb: “Friday is always the best or the worst day of the week.” Which it is to be depends on what is in store for us at the weekend. It is Easter Sunday that makes Good Friday “good.” It is always the end that gives meaning to a story.

Justamente antes de su muerte en Cruz, Jesús dice: “Todo se acabó” o “Todo se ha cumplido.” ¿Qué es lo que “se acabó y está cumplido?” Se acabó su tortura en la Cruz, su vida terrena, y su tarea en el mundo.
Cumplida queda en Él la voluntad del Padre y su misión de traer perdón y vida a la familia humana. “Todo está cumplido” por lo que respecta a la misión de Jesús en la tierra, y estamos seguros de que el mal nunca triunfará de nuevo sobre Él: la victoria final pertenece a Dios.
Pero… lo que todavía no está cumplido es el sueño de Dios para sus hijos e hijas: el Reino de justicia, fraternidad, compasión, y amor aquí en la tierra. Porque somos nosotros los discípulos de Jesús, somos nosotros los que tenemos que cumplir esa tremenda tarea inacabada.
¿Estamos conscientes de que tenemos que acoger al Espíritu de Jesús para que lleve a cabo esa misión en nosotros y con nosotros? Mientras haya hermanos y hermanas que sufren de hambre, descuido, e injusticia, ellos están añadiendo a lo que faltaba en el sufrimiento de Jesús, y nosotros, los discípulos hoy, tenemos que eliminar esos males. Nuestra celebración de la Pasión del Señor (el Viernes Santo) nos recuerda esta tremenda misión, de forma que podamos ayudar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas a resucitar con Él.
Oremos. “Padre, que el sufrimiento de tu Hijo no haya sido en vano. Llénanos con la vida y gracia que ganó para nosotros en la Cruz, y ayúdanos a imitarle y ser semejantes a Él, nuestro Señor Resucitado que vive y reina contigo por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.”
