March 11-12: Preparing to Celebrate Sunday’s Mass

As we get ready for Mass on the Third Sunday of Lent, it will be important to read (in advance) John 4, 5-42. Yes, it is a longer than usual Gospel reading – that’s why it will be good to take a look at it before arriving in church. The encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well is rich in symbols and it has many layers of meaning. Do yourself a favor and read it before coming to church.

See if John 4, 5-42 says anything about our present Lenten journey. For example, Lent is a time to think not so much about what we want from Jesus, but more about what Jesus asks of us. Lent is a time to remember that Jesus’ promises are freely given, but at the same time those promises make demands on us. Lent reminds us that it is not always easy to follow Jesus –  it costs us to do so.  Lent is also a time to be honest with Jesus, and with others – and with ourselves. It is a time to remember that everything false holds us back and only the truth will make us free. Lent is a time to remember that no matter what we’ve done, Jesus loves us and stands ready to forgive us. Finally, Lent is a time to share our faith with others, a time to find ways to let others know that Jesus is more than a part of our lives: He is the center of our lives.
