June 23: For the Good

Lawyers sometimes take on a case “pro bono,” which most of us interpret as “for free.” But the Latin expression is more literally translated “for the good.” With this is mind, let’s think about living our faith each and ever day in a “pro bono” fashion – “for the good” of others!

How might this happen in a practical way? Let’s stop complaining and start thanking God for our blessings, including the blessing of being able to do something good for another. Everyone reading this right now (on a computer or smartphone, with an internet connection) is quite likely in the top 10% of the world’s wealthiest people! Many people in the world today do not know where their next meal is coming from, do not have a bed to sleep in, or an extra set of clothes. We are blessed in so many ways: let’s be sure to recognize those blessings, thank God for them, and freely share them with others “for the good.”

Let us pray. “God of infinite love, you renew, strengthen, and bless us every day with holy gifts. Help us face each day with courage, keep us grateful for your blessings, and empower us to encourage our brothers and sisters in their present need. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.”
