The story is told of an insurance salesman who was so successful in his career that he was invited to share his story at a national business convention. To the surprise of some in the crowd, the man stressed the importance of being a good father first, before anything else. It turns out that the man’s daughter was in the audience. In the middle of his talk he turned to her and asked, “Sweetheart, do you remember the time I won the area prize for highest sales three years in a row?” She said, “No, Dad, I don’t.” And then he asked, “Well, do you remember when we used to go to Dairy Queen on Saturday nights and grab an ice cream cone?” And she said, “Oh, yes!” Then the man turned to the audience to make the point that daughters don‘t remember when you sold a million dollars’ worth of insurance, but they do remember all the special moments of father and child “bonding.”

The author Jodi Picoult, in Vanishing Acts, wrote: “I suddenly remembered being very little and being embraced by my father. I would try to put my arms around my father’s waist, and hug him back. I could never reach the whole way around the equator of his body; he was that much larger than life. Then one day, I could do it. I held him, instead of him holding me, and all I wanted at that moment was to have it back the other way.”

“God our Father, in your wisdom and love you have created us and called us to be your own. Bless our fathers and those who have loved us with a father’s love, that they may be strengthened in their important vocation. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. In moments of joy, rejoice with them. In times of struggle, give them your courage and perseverance. Grant that we may honor and appreciate them always with a spirit of profound respect. May the example and prayer of St. Joseph inspire them to live and love with courage. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
