June 18: Sowing “The Good”

Our faith moves from Sunday’s Mass to the rest of the week, from prayer to action, when we begin to learn to “look” more carefully for God’s loving presence – beyond the walls of the church building. The fact is that the world is filled with signs of God’s presence. Noticing those signs is always encouraging and uplifting (though also challenging at times) and it can be a wonderful way to build on the grace received in and through the Eucharist.

Last weekend’s parables about the farmer who sows seeds and about the tiny mustard seed that grows into a hardy shrub have given rise to this week-long series on justice. Jesus, after all, teaches that even “everyday things” are inhabited by God’s hidden presence; that is, they have meaning. So, we too need “attentive eyes” to be able to seek and find God in all things. The story of the mustard seed, for example, is an encouragement to look beyond initial appearances, beyond the seemingly insignificant mustard seed, in order to discover the presence of God who, as humble Love, is always at work in the soil of our life and history. This has to be our confidence, this has to be what gives us the strength to go forward every day, beyond Sunday, patiently sowing the good that will bear fruit.

Let’s never forget that the results of sowing “the good” do not depend our abilities: they depend on the action of God. It is up to us to sow, and to sow with love, dedication, and patience.

First Timothy 6,12: “Today I believe the Lord is saying to us all: do not hesitate, do not be afraid to engage the world with faith.” When we preach the liberating message of Jesus Christ and truly live His Gospel, we are offering the words of life to the world.  Our prophetic witness is an urgent and essential service not just to the Catholic community, but to the whole human family.

Let us pray. “Mary, patroness of our land, renew in us a love for the beauty and sanctity of all people. Help us to follow your Son by living our lives serving others.  Mother of the Church, open our hearts to the Gospel, protect us, and make us witnesses to the truth. In the name of your Son, who lives and reigns with the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.”
