July 28: Mystical Rose, Intercede for Us

During his “penitential pilgrimage” to Canada this week, Pope Francis has called to our attention the example of Our Lady of Guadalupe and her apparitions on this continent. He has described her as one “who handed on the faith to Indigenous people” in a proper and truly Christian way. Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Holy Father has said, “spoke the language of the people, dressed in their dress, and came to this land without violence or imposition.”

Pope Francis has also called upon the memory of the faithful and dedicated mothers and grandmothers of Native people, emphasizing their all-important role as “fountains of hope” for their children and grandchildren. He even mentioned his own grandmother as a woman from whom he first received the faith and heard the Gospels. He mentioned how grateful he remains for her example of tender care and “wisdom of life.”

Let us pray. “Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mystical Rose, make intercession for the Church, protect our Holy Father Francis, and help all those who invoke you in their need. Since you are our Mother, we humbly ask that you obtain for us from your most holy Son the grace of keeping our faith, sweet hope in the midst of life, burning charity always, and the precious gift of final perseverance. In the name of your Son. Amen.”
