At the heart of “the ongoing work of discipleship” is our willingness to go where Jesus leads and walk in His way. He teaches that His way is self-giving service of others … and not ever lording anything over them. Lent is our attempt to learn, all the more fully, how to walk in the footsteps of the Son of Man – who came not to be served, but to serve.
With a little less than a month to go before Easter Sunday, let’s not cut back on praying, fasting, and charity (the cornerstones of a good Lent). How could we devote ourselves more completely to these traditional Lenten disciplines? Pick up a copy of the parish pictorial directory in order to pray and fast for one particular person. Write down something nice about yourself every day and thank God for that particular gift. Intentionally give sincere compliments to everyone you have a conversation with. Turn off all noise and distractions for extended periods of time (hours at a time). Go to Confession. Spend an hour a day reading the Bible or Catholic books. Surprise someone in your neighborhood with a gift of flowers, a meal, or a basket of goodies. When you go to Mass – find someone you don’t know and introduce yourself.
Let us pray. “Lord our God, as we continue our Lenten journey, help us to empty ourselves of self-concern. Help us to allow you, more and more, to be Lord of our lives. And help us to see with clarity what is ours to do today – so that we might give you honor and glory in everything we say and do. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Se nos ha dicho que “el Hijo del Hombre no vino a ser servido, sino a servir.” ¿Cómo seguiremos a nuestro Señor? ¿Cómo podemos ser discípulos que nos comprometemos a servir?
Con claridad, el Señor Jesús nos enseña que su Reino no es de este mundo. Es diferente. En su Reino el servicio a los demás es el valor más importante. El que más sirve es el primero de todos. El que quiera ser el primero se tiene que hacer esclavo de los demás.
En la familia de Jesús, en el Reino y por lo tanto, en la Iglesia (que debería ser la semilla del Reino en el mundo), nos tenemos que hacer “esclavos” unos de otros, servidores sin límite de tiempo ni esfuerzos, en favor de todos. Y si es en favor de todos, ha de ser necesaria y prioritariamente en favor de los más pobres, los más alejados, y los más excluidos. El ejemplo lo tenemos en el mismo Jesús, que no vino para que le sirvieran, sino para dar su vida en rescate por muchos.
