February 19: Rights and Responsibilities

The social teaching of the Church is aimed at building a just society and helping us live lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. Over the next week, we will address many of the key elements of this social teaching.

The fourth pillar on which the social teaching of the Church rests is: Rights and Responsibilities. The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met. Therefore, every person has a fundamental right to life and a right to those things required for human decency. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities – to one another, to our families, and to the larger society.

Let us pray. “Lord our God, in the beginning, you created balance: the night to follow the day; the sea to touch the earth; all the wonderful elements of your creation coexisting in harmony. You are, indeed, the great Creator of variety and diversity. Thank you that you made us all to be unique and to reflect your love. Come, draw our human family and all of your creation together in all its wonder and beauty. Help us to love and respect each other. Inspire us to work together to become the full picture of your perfect love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.”
