August 18: St. Monica Novena

Next week, we will celebrate the Feast of St. Monica on Thursday, August 27th. You are invited to join in praying a St. Monica Novena, starting today (August 18th)!

At the recommendation of the Holy Cross Parish prayer group God’s Girls: throughout this Novena, nine days of prayer, we will surely be inspired by the example of St. Monica’s persistent prayers. When she was praying for her son’s conversion she prayed, fasted, and even asked clergy to talk with him – to argue with him. But they assured her it was useless after so many years. It turns out, though, that they were wrong, and (as we have seen) nothing is impossible for God. St. Monica’s prayers made a difference, and eventually, her son, St. Augustine, converted. Her husband and mother-in-law, who were both pagan, also converted because of her prayers and example.

Today, many people are starting this Novena by praying for something we need to persistently pray for: for peace. (Special note: you can start the Novena whenever you are able. Don’t worry if you enter into it on a day later than Day 1. “That we are praying” is more important than “when” we do it! If you go to the website below, you will be asked to sign-up by providing your email address & creating a password. Their assurance is “only prayers, no spam.” St. Monica: pray for us!)
