We have about 40 or so young people who are making their final preparations for their First Communion this spring. One of the things they are learning is that there is a great difference between ordinary bread (with a short shelf-life and that grows stale) and the Eucharistic food … that leads to eternal life.
As the Gospels attest, Jesus fed the people with bread and fish (John 6, 22-29), aware that normal hunger must be satisfied. Then, as people continued looking for still more to eat, He invited them to look for what would feed their deeper hunger. He gave them more than bread, nourishing them with God’s own presence, His own Body and Blood.
Obviously, we need material food because we are material beings, but our search must go deeper. After all, there is more to life than satisfying our physical desires. There is a deeper hunger that must be met if we are to live life to the full and be fully at peace. Jesus offers us the spiritual food that can satisfy the hunger of our hearts. Our deepest “seeking” is leading us towards God, for as St Augustine said, “You have made us for yourself and our hearts can never be at rest until they rest in you.”

“Trabajen no por el alimento que perece, sino por el alimento que perdura y da vida,” nos dice Jesús. Y también, nos pregunta, “¿Por qué me están ustedes buscando?” (Juan 6, 22-29)
¿Por qué buscamos a Dios? ¿Por qué buscamos a su Hijo Jesús? ¿Es solamente por los dones que Él nos da? Cierto que recibimos mucho de Dios, pero ¿buscamos a Jesús mismo, por lo que Él significa para nuestras vidas?
Esforcémonos por acercarnos más a Él y llegar a ser más como Él. Él nos pide fe en su persona y en su misión.
Oremos. “Oh Dios, anhelamos ardientemente la vida y felicidad eternas y la realización de todas nuestras esperanzas. Sacia todas nuestras hambres por medio de tu Hijo, que es nuestro Pan de Vida. Y cuando Él nos haya llenado de sí mismo, que nos guíe también y nos dé fuerza para poder llevar a un mundo que espera el alimento de reconciliación y alegría que solamente tú puedes dar en plenitud. Te lo pedimos por el mismo Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Amén.”
